With the smartwatch invasion upon us, there are those who have hidden their heads in the sand, those who have hopped on the technological bandwagon to design hybrid models at breakneck speed to turn an easy profit, and there are those who have rolled up their sleeves, stayed true to their roots and taken a stand for traditional mechanical watchmaking. Turning the trend on its head, Edouard Meylan, CEO of H. Moser & Cie, has unveiled a timepiece whose design is inspired by a smartwatch but its 100% Swiss core has a mechanical heart: Swiss Alp Watch. The special edition (50 available) has a white gold case (38.2x44mm) enclosing a manual wind HMC324 calibre which provides a 4-day power reserve (96 hours). The movement brings to life key time functions: the hours and minutes adorn the centre of the signature smoky dial as leaf-shape hands glide over the applied indices and the seconds appear in a counter at 6. AMERICAN APPAREL could come back from the brink if a takeover that plans to reinstate its founder is approved. Hagan Capital Group and Silver Creek Capital Partners, the investors behind the offer, announced a $300 million takeover bid yesterday - with the caveat that sacked founderDov Charney would be reinstated.

"Dov's creativity, entrepreneurialism and dedication are the cornerstone of American Apparel," Chad Hagan, managing partner of Hagan Capital, toldBloomberg. "Removing him from the company's board and leadership was a shortsighted mistake, and we are seeing the results of this error unfold in the declining performance of the company today."

Charney was dismissed by the American Apparel board in 2014 for misconduct - including alleged misappropriation of company funds, andfor violating the chain's sexual-harassment policy.

The alternative for the brand would be to accept a bankruptcy plan that would hand ownership to bondholders. The new plan - which asserts that major creditors will be repaid in full, unlike the bankruptcy plan in which only a portion of their outlay will be repaid - is likely to be more attractive to the company's many lenders, but their acceptance of it is not yet assured.

JERRY HALL has announced her engagement to media tycoon Rupert Murdoch three months after making their relationship public.

The union will be the first marriage for the Texan-born supermodel, who never formally tied the knot with her most famous former partner - and the father of her four children - Mick Jagger. Their 1990 symbolic ceremony in Bali was declared invalid by the High Court of England in 1999.

Although the news may come as a surprise to some, the way the couple decided to make the announcement with a traditional listing in the births, marriages and deaths section of The Times is not - the newspaper is  one of the titles in Murdoch's  News Corporation portfolio.

While it will be the first marriage for Hall, 59, it will be the third for Murdoch, 84, who divorced Wendi Deng in 2013. No further details about the marriage or when it will take place have been disclosed, but aspokesperson for the couple told the BBC, "They have loved these past months together," and are "thrilled to be getting married and excited about their future".

Donald Trump praises Kim Jong-un for how he 'wipes out' political opponents

The US presidential hopeful Donald Trump has praised North Korea's despotic leader Kim Jong-un, saying the way he executes his political opponenets shows "he's the boss".

Speaking at a Republican rally in Iowa on Saturday, Mr Trump was met with a silent protest as he repeated his now-familiar assertion that Muslims shouldn't be allowed to enter the US.

But while he continues to denigrate whole swathes of the population for following a religion, the billionaire reserved some praise for North Korea's dictator.

After coming to power when he was 28, Mr Kim cemented his rule through a series of purges, including the execution of his uncle Jang Song Thaek.

“You’ve got to give him credit," Mr Trump said. "How many young guys — he was like 26 or 25 when his father died — take over these tough generals, and all of a sudden — you know, it’s pretty amazing when you think of it. How does he do that?

"Even though it is a culture, and it’s a cultural thing, he goes in, he takes over, he’s the boss. It’s incredible.

"He wiped out the uncle, he wiped out this one, that one. This guy doesn’t play games and we can’t play games with him. Because he really does have missiles and he really does have nukes."

Mr Trump was speaking after it emerged North Korea has carried out new nuclear weapons tests, which the hermit kingdom claimed involved its first hydrogen bomb.

The 2016 candidate has a track record of praising the leadership qualities of controversial world powers - from Vladimir Putin to the Chinese government. In August, he suggested Mr Kim might be a "genius" and called on South Korea to pay the US in exchange for the ongoing protection of its military allegiance.
