10 DESIGNERS WHO ARE SHOWING AT NEW YORK FASHION WEEK FOR THE FIRST TIME
The most exciting designers debuting this NYFW.
69 DENIM
What can we expect from this "non-gender, non-demographic" clothing line? Baggy overalls (yes!), geometric denim tunics (yes!), and those giant scarves Lenny Kravitz wears to avoid the paparazzi. Bonus: Everything is made in 69's hometown of Los Angeles.
ANNA K
Hailing from Ukraine, Anna K was a teen model when she first started making clothes that soon got noticed by street style blogs. Her fusion of childhood images (rocket ships, ballerinas, stars) with sneakers and leather is already a hit at boutiques like Colette. Did we mentioned she just turned 20 in November? Yep.
A.P.C.
That effortless French style thing? Blame A.P.C.'s Jean Touitou, master of the best slouchy/sexy ratio. This season, A.P.C. shows in New York for the first time, sparking rumors that Kanye West, Touitou's sometime-protégé, will stop by.
HIROMI ASAI
To get to New York, this revered kimono artisan campaigned on Kickstarterfor support. She got it—over $66,000!—and now Asai and her atelier will realize their dream of "bringing real kimonos to NYFW." It's going to be gorgeous.
LYZ OLKO
Lyz Olko just launched her collection this summer, but she already counts Kendall Jenner and Sky Ferreira as fans of her bespoke denim, hand-painted sweatshirts, and silk bomber jackets, which she sews herself on Manhattan's Lower East Side. For NYFW, the former Obesity + Speed creative director teams with jewelry designer Pamela Love for a secret dinner party and fashion show. Well, now it's not so secret.
MICHELLE HELENE
MICHELLE HELENE
Reason enough to check out this line: Michelle Helene and her brother Alex hand weavetheir pieces on location in Taos, New Mexico. (Population: 5,716.) Will the slow fashion movement finally find its poster children? Find out this week.
R13
Good news: They have killer jeans and leather jackets. Bad news: They like to photograph their models inhaling cigarettes. Best news: When their latest collection launches on Wednesday, February 10, it'll be called "F*CKERS." Awesome...as long as there's a no-smoking section.
SCOTCH & SODA
Now that Diesel is showing in Milan, another European lifestyle label is coming for its spot. If you can't get enough of the Amsterdam label's cable-knit hoodies and selvage denim, you will be very excited indeed.
THIS IS THE UNIFORM
Last season, This Is the Uniform showed a sparse but super-cool collection inside a tiny London storefront. This season, designer Jenna Young takes her label stateside, because world domination is a useful thing for a young female business owner.
XULY.BËT
Designer Lamine Kouyaté hails from Mali, creates in Paris, and took Manhattan by storm in September when PR hero Kelly Cutrone staged his jaw-dropping guerrilla fashion show on 33rd Street, complete with a double Dutch team and 15 models. This season, Xuly.Bët ismaking it "official" and showing at Skylight Studios.
